How does this DIY Hand Water Pump work?
The lift pump is based on the principle that "air exerts pressure."
During upstroke, a partial vacuum is created in the barrel under the piston. Once the vacuum is generated the pressure below the piston becomes less than the atmospheric pressure. This opens the lower valve and liquid rises into the barrel.
Finally, during downstroke, the pressure in the barrel rises, which makes the liquid to pass and flow on to the outlet pipe.
(At the time of upstroke lower valve closes and the upper valve opens. However, during the downstroke, the lower valve closes and the upper valve opens.)
"This process works because of the pressure difference inside and outside the pump."
